The Importance of Fiducial Marks in SMT Assembly

Fiducial Marks in SMT Assembly

In the world of Smt assembly, fiducial marks are a critical part of ensuring that every component is placed accurately. Typically circular or square in shape, they are used as reference points for the machine that will place the components during the SMT process. Without these reference points, the automated machine would not be able to locate or correctly align the electronic components. This is especially important when manufacturing fine-pitch surface-mount technology (SMT) boards, where the component placement needs to be extremely precise.

In smt assembly, the pick-and-place machine is used to place a large variety of different electronic components on the PCB, such as resistors, capacitors, and LEDs. The machines are programmed with the specifications of each of these components, and the machine will then position them where needed on the board. This is done with the help of the fiducial marks, which are located on the corners of the PCB. These markings are specifically used to help the machine identify the PCB and determine its location.

There are two types of fiducial marks: global and local. Global fiducial marks are used to distinguish the circuit pattern from the panel PCB reference point and are usually positioned based on a three-point grid system with the lower left mark at the 0,0 point, and the other two in the X and Y axis positive directions. Local fiducial markers require a higher level of precision and are used to locate individual components that require more attention. These markings are often added to the top and bottom copper layers of the board, and they must be free of solder mask.

The Importance of Fiducial Marks in SMT Assembly

Ideally, fiducial marks should be round in shape, but they can also be square or diamond-shaped. They should also be clearly defined and not covered by any copper traces, as this can confuse the inspection camera from the SMT inspection tools. The positioning of the fiducial marks on the PCB is another key factor to consider when determining whether to use them or not.

The position of the fiducial marks should be optimized for the SMT assembly process, as this will improve the efficiency and accuracy of the assembly. This is why the fiducial marks should not be located in areas of the board that are likely to experience vibration during assembly. In addition, the fiducial marks should be clear of any solder mask or silk screen so that the inspection cameras can identify them easily.

Increasingly, manufacturers are turning to SMT assembly instead of through-hole. This is because SMT can be much faster and cheaper, but it does require a great deal of attention to detail to produce high-quality products. For this reason, it is imperative to work with a qualified electronics contract manufacturer that can advise on the best assembly methods for your specific project. They can also provide the latest in SMT assembly equipment to ensure that your product is assembled with the utmost care and quality.
