Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently took a ride on a gearless scooter during an inspection of the newly built loop at the Hebbal flyover in Bengaluru.

He first rode the scooter alone and later with a pillion rider, catching the attention of locals and the media alike.

However, what seemed like a casual ride soon turned controversial.

Whose Scooter Was It?

The scooter, with the registration number KA 04 JZ 2087, is registered under the name Babjan, a resident of RT Nagar, as per TOI. After a check by city traffic police, it was revealed that the scooter had 34 pending traffic violations amounting to Rs 18,500 in fines.

The offences included riding without a helmet, talking on the phone while riding, signal jumping, and improper parking.

What Did the Police Say?

Police summoned the vehicle owner to the Hebbal traffic police station. On Wednesday, he paid Rs 1,000 on the spot and promised to clear the remaining Rs 17,500 soon, according to officials.

As for Shivakumar, he was seen wearing a half-helmet, which, as per traffic rules, is not legally allowed. However, the police clarified that while such helmets are discouraged, riders are not currently being fined for them.

Here’s How the Social Media Reacted?

Netizens quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the issue. Some questioned whether the Deputy CM even holds a valid driving licence. Others criticised the use of illegal half-helmets.

The JD(S) party also shared the video online, mocking the situation and pointing out the unpaid fines.
