Nigella Lawson uses this strange ingredient to make hummus

Hummus is a straight-forward and speedy dip to make, requiring just chickpeas, garlic, olive oil and tahini.

But if you find you’re out of tahini, or simply feel like trying something new, Nigella Lawson has a nutty alternative to the sesame paste, and some people even prefer it.

After trying the recipe, one user going by the name jlfrater, commented “I never used tahini anymore” proclaiming to have been converted to Nigella’s version of the popular Middle Eastern dip, while another user called Patriq pointed out it’s “great for those with a sesame allergy”.

A kitchen staple for many, spread on toast or added to a bowl of porridge in the morning, you can also use your peanut butter to make hummus by following Nigella’s tasty version of the recipe, which makes enough for 10 people and can keep for two days in the fridge.

Adding a slightly sweeter depth to the dip, the celebrity chef describes it as a perfect plate to make for friends, or suggests keeping a batch in the fridge to snack on during the day.

An easy way to add protein to your diet, peanut butter also provides energy due it being packed with healthy fats.

Nigella Lawson’s Peanut Butter Hummus

Ingredients

800 grams of chickpeas (two 400ml cans)

One peeled garlic clove

60ml olive oil

Six tablespoons smooth peanut butter

Three tablespoons fresh lemon juice

Two teaspoons Maldon sea salt flakes

Two teaspoons ground cumin

Five tablespoons Greek yoghurt

Two tablespoons peanuts (chopped)

One teaspoon smoked paprika (sprinkled on top)

Serve with pitta bread, tortillas or crackers

Method

Drain and rinse the chickpeas. Add the garlic clove, chickpeas, three tablespoons of olive oil, peanut butter, lemon juice, salt and cumin into a food processor and blitz into a textured purée.

Add four tablespoons of Greek yoghurt to your mix and process again. Different types of chickpeas can make the hummus thicker. If the hummus is still very thick, add another one or two tablespoons of yoghurt.

Taste for seasoning, adding more lemon juice and salt as needed.

Once ready to serve, mix the chopped peanuts with paprika and sprinkle on top.
