The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has kicked off work on a brand-new elevated road between Ghatkopar and Thane.
The new corridor will offer a completely signal-free route from Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar in Thane, cutting down travel time to just 30–35 minutes, as per Free Press Journal. The elevated road will seamlessly connect to the existing Eastern Freeway, giving vehicles a smooth journey from South Mumbai to Thane without a single traffic signal.

Where Is the New Flyover Coming Up?
The elevated road will run from Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar to Anand Nagar in Thane, passing directly over the busy Eastern Express Highway. With three lanes in each direction, this 12.955-kilometre-long flyover is designed to ease the traffic chaos that daily travellers often face.
Work has already begun on the ground, with excavation and pillar work underway. Barricades have been placed along the route for safety, and parts of the construction are now visible to the public.
Why Is This Corridor So Important?
This new link will connect seamlessly with the existing 16.8-km Eastern Freeway, which begins at PD Mello Road near CSMT and ends at Chedda Nagar. While this freeway has helped ease congestion from South Mumbai, commuters heading to Thane still faced slow-moving traffic, especially around Mankhurd and beyond.
The new corridor aims to fix that problem once and for all, giving vehicles an uninterrupted route from South Mumbai straight to Thane.
Furthermore, land acquisition, often a major delay in such projects, was completed in record time thanks to swift action by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA). One of the biggest challenges was the relocation of 1,694 slum units in Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar.
In a first, the MMRDA will also handle the redevelopment of this slum cluster, clearing the path for smoother construction.
