The 335-kilometre expressway will be a joint effort between Karnataka’s Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has unveiled plans for a high-speed expressway connecting the two cities, aiming to cut travel time by 7 to 8 hours, as per Hindustan Times.
In July, MoRTH began the search for a consulting firm to create a detailed project plan. By November, nine companies had submitted their bids, and the ministry is expected to select a winner in early 2024.
Once chosen, the consultant will have 540 days to prepare the report, setting the stage for construction to kick off by 2028.

335 km Stretch: The expressway, approximately 335 km long, will be developed by the Karnataka Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Both agencies will work together on the route alignment and land acquisition to ensure the project runs smoothly.
Four to Six Lanes: The expressway will have four to six lanes, running through Hassan and connecting the state capital with the coastal city of Mangaluru. This design will ease traffic flow and reduce congestion on the route.
Reduced Travel Time: Once finished, the expressway could reduce travel time by a significant 7 to 8 hours, transforming the current journey, which is often slowed down by traffic delays.
Enhanced Transport Network: This new road will strengthen Karnataka’s transport network, boosting economic activities and making travel and trade easier between Bengaluru and Mangaluru.
The existing Bengaluru-Mangaluru highway faces frequent challenges, especially during the monsoon season, when landslides are common. While some parts of the route already have six lanes, outdated infrastructure and unpredictable conditions continue to cause delays.
