The information systems of organizations and individuals require robust protection from cyberattacks. The latter process encodes data so it can only be decoded by users with secret keys and is particularly effective in preventing data loss and corruption in the event of equipment failure or other disasters.

Educating employees and other stakeholders about cybersecurity best practices is important to prevent attacks. Regular training programs can help individuals recognize and respond to phishing attempts, social engineering attacks and other common threats. Incident response planning and ongoing risk management can also help prevent cyberattacks.

A successful defense requires a combination of quantitative and qualitative risk analysis. Quantitative risk analysis uses a variety of metrics to determine the likelihood and magnitude of losses associated with each risk, and compares those risks against the costs and effectiveness of countermeasures. Qualitative risk assessment is a less precise method of risk treatment, but can be useful where the quantitative methods are impractical.
