Alan Titchmarsh shares how to keep lavender blooming and ‘prolong their life’

Lavender plants will fit in and add beauty to all gardens they grow in with their stunning blooms.

Not only does it make a great bed and border edging but it also scents the air when you pass it, according to Alan Titchmarsh when previously speaking to Express.co.uk.

While lavender is usually regarded as a summer-blooming flower, some lavender plants are early bloomers with their magnificent blooms appearing early in spring.

Others are late bloomers with blooms opening up in midsummer and lasting until late summer.

Although lavender plants are relatively low maintenance, they do require a little helping hand to keep them thriving.

According to the TV gardener, for lavender plants to keep blooming and “give a beautiful display” they should be pruned.

He said: “To prolong the life of your lavender plants, prune them every summer just as the flowers are beginning to fade.

“Go over them in July with shears, but don’t cut back too hard into old wood.”

Lavender does not break new growth easily from old stems so don’t cut back into the woody stems.

Left to their own devices, lavender can become woody and ungainly, so to keep plants compact and attractive, it’s best to trim them annually in late summer, just after flowering has finished.

Alan continued: “Snip back into relatively new growth, a couple of inches behind the flower, and you can keep them shapely and rejuvenated so they give a beautiful display.”

Gardeners can keep cutting sprigs throughout autumn too, during which time the fragrance remains strong, but they need to make sure they cut before the flowers begin to fade.

As well as pruning, Alan claimed that gardeners need to provide lavender with their “ideal” conditions.

He explained: “The ideal growing conditions for these Mediterranean plants are well-drained soil and bright sunshine so they don’t sit and sulk quite so much in our soggy winters.”
